External sources & MCP

Crux can pull research from the tools where it already lives. Account connections are managed under Settings → External sources (same catalogue as Create → Connect). Choose what to include for a project in Connect; set up or disconnect credentials in Settings. Available on paid plans.

To install Crux into AI assistants (Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, and other MCP clients for research capture), open Settings → External sources → AI assistants. To install into Build IDEs (Cursor one-click, Codex, Windsurf, VS Code), open Settings → External sources → Build. That is separate from Import MCP servers on the Default tab, which pulls other tools’ MCP servers into Crux.

Dovetail

See Work with Dovetail for step-by-step setup. In short: paste an API token under Settings → External sources, then Ask can search Dovetail live or you can import insights as Evidence.

Google Analytics

See Work with Google Analytics. Connect or disconnect under Settings → External sources, then import GA4 audience and behaviour reports into Research tables and review suggested evidence and persona attributes.

Gmail and Outlook

See Work with Gmail and Outlook. Connect the mailbox under Settings → External sources, then set per-project filters — addresses, subject keywords, Gmail labels or Outlook categories — so only the project's threads land in Research as Email items.

Notion (via MCP)

See Work with Notion. Use the Notion preset when adding an MCP server so Ask can read workspace docs.

AI assistants (install Crux MCP)

Install the Crux MCP server into the AI assistant you already use — so it can read your graphs and write back into them:

1. Open Settings → External sources → AI assistants.
2. Pick Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, or Other.
3. Complete Crux sign-in when prompted, then save research, ask about the experience, or plan work by project name.

All three get the same tools as the Build IDEs: read research and experience, capture research, create experience entities, and schedule activities and to-dos onto the Plan calendar and timeline. Write is on by default and can be turned off per connection in Settings → Integrations — see the full tool list.

Build (install Crux MCP)

Install Crux into coding IDEs so agents can read Experience and tag UI as they build:

1. Open Settings → External sources → Build.
2. Pick Cursor (one-click Add to Cursor), Codex, Windsurf, or VS Code.
3. Complete Crux sign-in when prompted, then prompt by project name.

Other MCP servers (import into Crux)

Any tool that exposes an MCP server (Model Context Protocol) can be connected so Crux reads it:

1. Open Settings → External sources → Default → Add MCP server.
2. Enter a name, the server URL, and optional auth (bearer token or custom header).
3. Crux verifies the server and lists its tools and resources. Resources can be imported into the research graph; tools become available to Ask, toggled per server with Ask agent can call tools.

Website ingestion

Give Crux a website URL and it ingests the pages as research — parsed, chunked, and embedded like uploads. This complements Experience scan, which reads a site for structure rather than content.

Provenance

Every research item carries its source, and the list's source filter shows it at a glance: CRUX, Google Drive, Figma, Dovetail, Analytics, Gmail, Outlook, Website, or MCP. Your filter selections are remembered per project — see Filtering, sorting, and favourites.

MCP includes both inbound imports (Notion and other MCP resources) and outbound captures from coding / research agents via capture_research — those notes and frame lines also show the MCP chip.

• Connections are per user — teammates connect their own accounts.
• Removing a connection never deletes items already imported.
